TikTok ads for Australian brands: where they fit

TikTok is a demand creation channel, not a search engine. Here is when it earns a place in an Australian media mix, and when to wait.

In short

TikTok ads suit Australian brands whose product shows well on video and who can produce native creative in volume. It reaches about half of Australian adults and works mainly by creating demand, so it fits best alongside search and Meta rather than replacing them. Judge it on blended results, not only last-click sales.

What TikTok is good at

TikTok is a discovery platform. People are not searching for a product when they open it. They are watching full-screen, sound-on video and deciding in a second or two whether to keep watching. That makes it strong for putting a product in front of people who did not know they wanted it, and weak for capturing someone who is ready to buy right now.

The audience is broader than its reputation. DataReportal's Digital 2026 Australia report puts TikTok's ad reach at 10.9 million Australians aged 18 and over, or 51.2% of adults, based on TikTok's own advertising tools. Ad reach is not the same as active users, but it is clear the platform is not just for teenagers. Since 10 December 2025, TikTok has also been one of the platforms required to stop under-16s in Australia holding accounts, according to eSafety.

Where it fits in the mix

The simplest way to place TikTok is to separate channels that create demand from channels that capture it. Search captures demand that already exists. TikTok mostly creates it. Meta sits in between and can do both.

That last row matters. If you judge TikTok only on last-click sales inside its own reporting, you will often undervalue it or cut it too early. Look at what happens to branded search, direct traffic and total sales while it runs.

Signs it is a good fit

  • Your product shows well on video. A visible result, a demo, a before and after, or a founder with something to say.
  • You can produce a lot of native creative. Not polished TV ads, but fast, vertical, people-led video, in volume, refreshed often.
  • Your audience is there. Check the reach estimate for your locations and age ranges in TikTok Ads Manager before you commit.
  • You have a clear, simple offer. Something a viewer understands in a few seconds.
  • Your measurement is in place. Pixel and Events API set up, and a way to see blended results.

When to hold off

TikTok is a poor first channel if you cannot keep up with creative, if your budget is already stretched across search and Meta, or if you sell into a narrow B2B niche where LinkedIn or search is a more direct route to buyers. It is also worth waiting if Meta is not yet working for you. The creative and offer problems that hold Meta back usually show up on TikTok too, often faster.

What it costs to test properly

TikTok's help centre lists minimum daily budgets of more than $50 at campaign level and $20 at ad group level. The page does not name a currency, so confirm the exact floor for an Australian dollar account in Ads Manager. Either way, these are technical floors, not a sensible test budget.

A fair test needs enough spend for the system to find conversions, enough creative to learn what works, and enough time to read the results against your blended numbers. On bidding, TikTok offers Maximum Delivery, which spends the budget to get as many results as possible, and Cost Cap, which steers delivery toward a target cost per result. Starting with Maximum Delivery while you learn your real costs, then moving to Cost Cap, is a reasonable path.

Budget for production as well as media. On TikTok, the creative is the targeting.

Formats worth knowing

  • In-feed video. The core format. TikTok supports 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 video, but full-screen vertical is what the feed is built around.
  • Spark Ads. Spark Ads run organic posts as ads, from your own account or from a creator's account with their authorisation. Views, likes, comments and follows from the paid boost stay with the original post.
  • Smart+ campaigns. Smart+ is TikTok's automated campaign type for sales, app, lead and traffic goals. You supply the goals, creative, locations and languages, and it handles much of the targeting and creative testing. You can switch off its generated creatives.
  • Instant Forms. For lead generation, TikTok can collect details in an Instant Form without sending people to your site. Follow up quickly, because lead quality depends on it.

Measurement before media

Set tracking up before you spend. TikTok recommends running the Pixel and the Events API together, with event deduplication, so conversions the browser misses can still be counted. Without that, the algorithm optimises on partial data and your reporting understates what is happening.

Even with good tracking, expect TikTok's influence to show up partly in other channels. Plan to read it through blended cost per acquisition, branded search trends and, at larger spend, holdout tests.

Running it alongside Meta

For most Australian brands, TikTok works best as an addition to a working Meta and search setup, not a replacement. Concepts that win on one platform can be reworked for the other, but straight reposts of Meta ads tend to look like ads, and TikTok viewers scroll past them.

At Arche, TikTok sits inside the same paid social engagement as Meta, within the same retainer. That keeps creative, budget and measurement decisions in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok only useful for reaching young people?

No. DataReportal reports TikTok's ad reach at 10.9 million Australians aged 18 and over, around half of all adults. Since December 2025, under-16s in Australia are also not permitted to hold accounts. Check the reach estimate for your own audience in TikTok Ads Manager.

What is the minimum budget for TikTok ads?

TikTok's help centre lists minimum daily budgets of more than $50 per campaign and $20 per ad group, without naming a currency, so confirm the floor for your account in Ads Manager. A useful test needs more than that, plus budget for creative production.

Can we reuse our Meta ads on TikTok?

You can, and the formats are compatible, but ads made for Meta often look out of place in the TikTok feed. It is usually better to take the winning idea and rework it in a native TikTok style, with people, sound and a fast opening.

Should we start with TikTok or Meta?

For most brands, Meta and search come first, because they combine reach with stronger direct response. TikTok is a strong addition once your offer, creative process and tracking are working, and it can then help grow demand those channels capture.
